Morning, Morning

Shut away with the madmen
chewing on the bones of time
writing words for empty rooms
out of sight, out of mind
My voice rises in the darkness
fills it up with sorrow's song
far away there's a city
where I belong, where I belong
They came round in the morning
to paint a plague cross on your door
under cold kiss of sunlight
never seen a bleaker dawn
And I've no notion of the future
you call me up to tell me so
if I still was your lover
I would know, I would know

Machines are in my head they're in the street outside
they're pulling down the houses and the trees pulling down the sky
and I try to rise above but the dust clouds choke me out
(you crack me up...)
And four horsemen came riding
the whole street stood applauding
She was up on her rooftop adjusting her aerial
to pick up signals from alien life forms from
higher minds than mine, higher minds maybe you'll find
some kind of enlightenment
(or maybe not...)
But I ignore your angels
I don't return your calls
And if I were to say I was sorry, would I really mean a word?
I don't think so...
if I were to say I was sorry it'd be the biggest lie you'd ever heard.
And down by the cenotaph there was a crowd gathering
thought it might be a laugh to see who was around
but I keep my head down
you don't want to look too smart or too stupid not round here
(they will tear you apart...)
Your back was turned but I'd know you anywhere
just from the shape and the colour of your hair
And if I were to say I was sorry, would I really mean a word?
I don't think so...
if I were to say I was sorry it'd be the biggest lie you'd ever heard.
